Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about Texas county population data, methodology, and statewide trends.
What is the total population of Texas across all 254 counties?+
Across all 254 counties, Texas has an estimated population of 31,709,821 residents as of July 1, 2025, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. Texas is the second most populous U.S. state, behind only California.
Which is the most populous county in Texas?+
Harris County, home to Houston, is the most populous county in Texas and the third most populous county in the United States, with an estimated 5,045,026 residents in 2025. It is followed by Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, and Travis counties. Together these five counties hold about 43% of the state's population.
Which is the least populated county in Texas?+

How is Texas county population data measured?+
Population figures on this site are the U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 county population estimates for July 1, 2025, from the Population Estimates Program. Numbers are updated when the Census Bureau releases a new vintage each year. See our methodology page for full provenance.
Which Texas counties are growing the fastest?+
By percentage growth between April 2020 and July 2025, the fastest-growing Texas counties were Kaufman, Liberty, Rockwall, Comal, Hays, Montgomery, Ellis, Parker, according to Census Bureau estimates. Almost all are suburban counties around Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio.

Where the numbers come from
Every figure on this page is from the U.S. Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program. The current numbers are the Vintage 2025 estimates for July 1, 2025. Growth figures compare them with the Bureau's April 1, 2020 estimates base, which starts from the 2020 Census.
Across all 254 counties, Texas grew from 29,149,498 to 31,709,821 people over that period, a gain of 2,560,323 (+8.8%).
Fastest-growing Texas counties since 2020
These are the counties with the highest percentage growth. Nearly all of them are suburban counties on the edge of Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, Austin or San Antonio, where new subdivisions are absorbing people moving out from the core counties.

Counties that added the most people
Raw numbers tell a different story from percentages. The big core counties are growing more slowly in percentage terms, but they still add more residents than anywhere else.

| Presidio | 6,130 | 5,433 | -697 | -11.4% |
| Cottle | 1,379 | 1,224 | -155 | -11.2% |
Small counties can swing sharply when a single employer, prison or oilfield camp opens or closes, so these percentages should be read alongside the actual numbers.
Urban and rural Texas
The ten most populous counties hold 18,645,770 people, 58.8% of the state's total. Meanwhile the median Texas county has only 18,916 residents, and 91 counties have fewer than 10,000. Texas is a big-city state and a small-town state at the same time, and county statistics make that unusually easy to see.
Using these figures responsibly
- Cite the source and year, for example: "U.S. Census Bureau, Vintage 2025 county population estimates (July 1, 2025)."
- County totals include everyone in the county, not just residents of the county seat or largest city.
- Estimates are revised each year. A new vintage can change earlier years too, so use the same vintage when comparing years.
- For neighborhood-level detail, such as age, income or language, use the Census Bureau's American Community Survey tables.
Population questions
What is the difference between the Census count and a population estimate?+
The decennial census is a full count of every resident, taken every ten years; the last was on April 1, 2020. Between censuses, the Census Bureau publishes annual estimates for July 1 of each year using births, deaths and migration records. The figures on this site are the Vintage 2025 estimates for July 1, 2025.
Which Texas county grew the most since 2020?+
By number of new residents, Harris County added about 314,618 people between the April 2020 base and July 2025. By percentage, the fastest-growing counties were Kaufman, Liberty, Rockwall.
How many Texas counties are losing population?+
82 of 254 counties had fewer residents in July 2025 than in April 2020, according to Census Bureau estimates. Almost all are small rural counties, and West Texas has more of them than any other region.
How accurate are county population estimates?+
They are the official figures used by federal and state agencies, but they are still estimates. They tend to be most reliable for large counties. For very small counties, a change of a few dozen people can swing the percentage noticeably, so compare several years before drawing conclusions.
