Major Texas cities by county
Texas's largest cities anchor its most populous counties. Houston (Harris), Dallas (Dallas), San Antonio (Bexar), Austin (Travis), and Fort Worth (Tarrant) form the backbone of the Texas Triangle — the urbanized corridor where roughly two-thirds of Texans live. Beyond the Triangle, El Paso anchors far West Texas, while McAllen, Brownsville, and Laredo dominate the Rio Grande Valley.
Outside the metros, every Texas county has a designated county seat — usually the historic center of commerce and government. Some are tiny (Mentone in Loving County has fewer than 20 residents); others, like Houston and San Antonio, rank among the largest cities in the United States.
