Lipscomb County was established in 1876, named for Abner Smith Lipscomb, justice of the Texas Supreme Court (1846–1856) and secretary of state of the Republic of Texas (1840), and carved from Bexar County. It is one of the 254 counties of Texas, located in the Panhandle region.
