About
Houston County was established in 1837, named for Sam Houston (1793–1863), general of the Texan Revolution, commander at the Battle of San Jacinto and later president of the Republic of Texas, U.S. Senator and governor of the state of Texas, and carved from Nacogdoches County. It is one of the 254 counties of Texas, located in the East Texas region.
