Collingsworth County was established in 1876, named for James Collinsworth, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and first chief justice of the Republic of Texas. (spelling differs due to an error in the bill creating the county), and carved from Bexar County. It is one of the 254 counties of Texas, located in the Panhandle region.
